PASSING ON SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

olk artists learn their skills from a variety of sources. In more traditional communities, folk art is passed on from parent to child. Children begin to learn the crafts of their parents early. Unlike society in the United States, in which childrenÆs activities differ greatly in kind from those of their parents, in rural Latin America the difference is mainly in degree. Therefore, a child who is learning a craft is not expected to do adult-level production but is expected to engage in the same activity as his or her parents. In other situations, knowledge and skill are passed on through periods of lengthy apprenticeship. Still other folk artists are self-taught, but these individuals seem to be rare.
